Detriot Pistons hire Maurice Cheeks as head coach


The Detroit Pistons have hired Maurice Cheeks as head coach.

Cheeks spent the 2013 season as an assistant coach under Scott Brooks with the Oklahoma City Thunder.

He started his coaching career with the Philadelphia 76ers in 1994 as an assistant coach. Cheeks was drafted as a point guard in the 1978 NBA Draft by the 76ers.

After his time with the 76ers as an assistant, Cheeks was head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers from 2001-2005. He then went on to become the head coach of the 76ers in 2005. In 2008, he parted ways with the 76ers and joined the Thunder in 2009.

During his time as a head coach in the NBA, he has a 284-286 record.

As a player, Cheeks was a member of the 1983 NBA championship team as a member of the 76ers. He also played for the San Antonio Spurs, New York Knicks, Atlanta Hawks and the New Jersey Nets.
