J.H.W. makes his 2013 NFL award selections

By James H. Williams

AP Most Valuable Player:

Peyton Manning

Manning had a record breaking season while leading his team to the Super Bowl… What more can you say about him.

AP Coach of the Year:

Ron Rivera

I remember when Rivera was on the hot seat and boom there was that mid-season turn around that got the Carolina Panthers to the top of the NFC.

AP Offensive Player of the Year:

LeSean McCoy

Well Peyton Manning is my MVP so I had to go with LeSean McCoy, who won the rushing title during his first season with head coach Chip Kelly.

AP Defensive Player of the Year:

Richard Sherman

Maybe it’s just because of what he has done recently but most voter will have had his name in the back of their mind when voting… Keep that in mind.

AP Offensive Rookie of the Year:

Keenan Allen

Allen should get this award after being drafted in the third round out of Cal to put together 71 catches for 1,046 receiving yards and eight touchdowns during his first professional season.

AP Defensive Rookie of the Year:

Kiko Alonso

Alonso finished third among all NFL players with a total of 159 tackles.

Fantasy Football Player of the Year:

LeSean McCoy

With a down year for players like Arian Foster and several others who were taken in the first round of fantasy drafts… McCoy pulled the rug under the feet of Adrian Peterson and Foster who were getting a lot of the early draft position talk.

Comeback Player of the Year:

Alex Smith

I think Alex Smith gets this award after leading the Kansas City Chiefs in an incredible season during his first season under head coach Andy Reid.

Most Improved Player of the Year:

Nick Foles

I am not sure this is an actual award for the NFL like it is for the NBA, but I would give this award to Foles after finding a way to make the most of his opportunities as the Eagles starter. I also think that streak without an interception was the talk of the league for several weeks and impressed many.
