USA advances to World Cup’s Round of 16

By James H. Williams

Despite the loss to Germany (1-0), the United States men’s soccer team will advance to the World Cup’s Round of 16.

Team USA finished second in the “Group of Death” (Group G) after Portugal defeated Ghana, 2-1.

Ghana tied the game against Portugal at 1-1 in the 57th minute after a goal made by Asamoah Gyan.

Gyan’s goal put the American team in real trouble as they faced elimination. Cristiano Ronaldo’s goal for Portugal in the 80th minute against Ghana gave the American team and its fans hope once again.

Still uncertain about the results of the Ghana-Portugal game, USA fight until the end with the hopes of getting a draw. Goalie Tim Howard had five saves for the U.S.

The United States will play Belgium in the Round of 16 on Tuesday.
