Redskins’ Brandon Meriweather to appeal NFL’s suspension

By Rayle King

Brandon  Meriweather  of  the  Washington  Redskins was suspended  by  the  NFL  for  a helmet to helmet  hit on  Tory  Smith  of  the  Baltimore  Ravens on August 25.

The  hit  occurred  last  Saturday  during  a  pre-season  game  between  the  two  teams.  The  former  pro  bowl  safety intends  to  appeal  the  two  game  suspension.

This  is  the  second  time that  the  NFL  suspended  Meriweather  and  the  sixth  time  that  a hit resulted  in  a  fine.  Last  season,  Meriweather  appealed  a  two  game suspension, which  was  later  reduced  to just one  game.

The  suspension has  been  criticized  by  other  members  of  the  Washington  Redskins along  with  Tory  Smith, who  was  the  receiver  that  was  hit  by Meriweather.

With  Roger  Goodell  as  commissioner,  specific  hits  has been  enforced  as  illegal.  This  makes  it  difficult  for  hitters  to  avoid making  an  illegal  hit  on  an  opponent.
